GSL Vocabulary
There are 7 groups of words. Each group has 100 words. Study one group of words each week.
Look at each word and how the word is used in a sentence.
If you don’t know what the word means after you see it in a sentence, look up the meaning in a dictionary and make a note card for the word.
Study your note cards every week until you have memorized the words and their meanings.
MAKING CARDSDiamond |

He gave her a diamond ring for her birthday. |
Here are some ideas for making note cards:
- Use small cards (no bigger than 3” by 5”) so they can be easily carried.
- Put the new word on one side and the definition (meaning) on the other side.
- You can also include the following information on the back side of the card:
- a translation of the new word in your language
- pictures or diagrams related to the new word
- phonetic pronunciation
- a sample sentence using the new word
- Practice- look at the new word and say the meaning. Later, look at the meaning and try to recall the new word.
- Say the words aloud or to yourself when you are studying the cards.
- Study the cards frequently and space your review. For example, when you learn a new word, try to study it later that day, the next day, the next week and then a few weeks later.
- Study the words with a partner occasionally. When reviewing with a partner, try to use the word in a new sentence.
- Change the order of the cards frequently. Don’t order the cards alphabetically or put the cards in groups of similar words. Words which look the same or have similar meanings are easy to confuse.
